Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

🎯 What is a Goal?

A Goal is something you commit to accomplishing within a specific timeframe to improve your musical skills with purpose. On Muzieka, setting a goal gives your practice structure, accountability, and momentum.

✅ You can set goals based on TYPE:

  • Practice (e.g., 15 minutes a day on fingerpicking drills)
  • Learning (e.g., Learn the solo to "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen)
  • Perform (e.g., Play at an open mic)
  • Creative (e.g., Write 3 songs by next month, Upload 3 Social Media Posts to Push a new Song)

🛠️ Each goal includes:

  • Start Date – when you submit the goal
  • End Date – chosen by you

⏱️ Time-Based Goals
Only goals of type Practice and Learning are Time Based.

  • Practice and Learning goals:
    • Require setting the target time to be logged toward the goal (e.g., 2 hours)
    • Require logging time via Practice Sessions (see FAQ below on "What is a Practice Session?")
    • Must meet the time requirement before the deadline
    • Can be marked Complete with an audio submission and/or video upload

🎯 Outcome-Based Goals
These focus on results rather than time logged.

  • Performance and Creative goals:
    • Are not based on practice time
    • Are completed by submitting your creative or performance deliverable
    • Can still log Practice Sessions for personal tracking, but they’re not required for goal completion

🚀 Why set a goal?

  • Helps you stay consistent
  • Builds a sense of accomplishment
  • Keeps your momentum going
  • Turns musical growth into something trackable and rewarding

Go to your dashboard (or the navigation bar) and click “+ Goal”. Choose a goal type, enter the details, and save.

  • Practice Goals (Time Based): Focused on improving specific techniques — think drills, scales, finger exercises, or metronome work.
  • Learning Goals (Time Based): Focused on mastering a particular skill or piece — like learning the solo to "Hotel California".
  • Performance Goals: Designed to prepare you for a live performance — a gig, recital, or full playthrough by a set date.
  • Creative Goals: Built for original work — songwriting, arranging, composing, or tasks like “Upload 3 music promo videos to Instagram.”

Each goal type is built to keep you accountable, show real progress, and be flexible enough to help you reach your goals — whether you're practicing daily or building toward a big milestone.

Goals are completed based on the goal type. Here's how each type works:

Practice and Lesson based Goals: Once you've logged enough practice sessions towards a goal to fulfill the required time commitment, the goal moves to Pending Completion. To move the goal to complete, upload a video showing what you've learned or practiced.

Creative and Performance based Goals: Remain active and in progress until their end date. Once the end date is met, it moves to Pending Completion. To mark it complete, upload a video showcasing the final creative result — such as a video of you playing the song — within 2 days of the goal’s end.

The video uploaded to move a goal to "Complete" status will be shared and public to ALL your followers.

Uploading an audio file provides proof that meaningful practice is taking place—not just time being logged passively. It offers you (and your teacher, if applicable) a real-time snapshot of your progress and helps keep time-based goals focused and accountable. While audio uploads are public by default, you can choose to make them private. However, to officially complete a goal, you must upload a video demonstrating what you’ve learned which is made public to all followers (this "Completion" video cannot be made private).

🕒 What is a Practice Session?

A Practice Session is how you log time spent working toward a specific goal — it's your proof of progress.

🎯 Example:

  • Goal Description: 15 min/day on fingerpicking drills
  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Duration: 7 days
  • Type: Practice

Each time you practice, you log a Practice Session by uploading an audio file (mp3, wav, m4a, aac, flac or ogg). These sessions automatically track toward your goal and appear in your dashboard.

Note: You don’t have to log every single day — just make sure your total time adds up to your goal before the deadline. You’re in control of your pace, but accountability matters.

You can either click the Practice button located in the navigation bar, and use the drop down to find the goal. In the dashboard, in the left column you can view your active goals, form which you can click on it and select the goal, or view active goals via the Goal menu also located in the Navigation bar.

Goals can have one of four statuses:
  • In Progress: This means the goal is currently active and underway. You're still within the timeframe and are expected to log practice or make progress.
  • Pending Completion: You've met the goal’s criteria (like reaching your required practice hours or hitting the end date), but it still requires a video upload to be officially marked as complete.
  • Completed: The goal has been successfully achieved within the set timeframe. You met your practice time (time based goals) and submitted required media (required for all goals) within the alotted time frame.
  • Missed: The goal’s end date passed without being completed. This means you didn't log sufficient time towards the goal and did not upload proof of completion by the alotted time (See "How are goals marked as complete" above).

If a goal reaches its end date without meeting the completion requirements, it will automatically be marked as Missed.

We encourage you to take note of what got in the way — and when you're ready, set a new goal with a more realistic timeframe or renewed commitment.

Goals are meant to hold you accountable — not be erased when they get tough.

Once a goal is submitted, it becomes a permanent part of your progress history. This includes missed goals, incomplete sessions, and your wins. You won’t be able to delete or edit goals after submission.

  • Data Integrity: Keeps your journey honest — no backtracking or erasing mistakes.
  • Progress Tracking: Reflect on what you completed, what you didn’t, and where you grew.
  • Lesson for Life: Missed goals aren’t failure — they’re data, helping you (and if applicable your teacher) to adjust and grow.

Set realistic goals, commit to the process, and let your history tell the story of your improvement — all of it.
